        | Once the playground of Russian
royalty, this city where Pushkin and Gogol lived continues as a major
cultural center. During World War II, Odessa suffered major damage, but many of the 19th
century French-style buildings reminiscent of St. Petersburg survived. Among
the many monuments are the Vorontsov Palace, the remains of the Turks'
fortress Enu Dunia, and the former Stock Exchange. Stroll on Primorsky
Boulevard, ending at the historic Potemkin staircase that encompasses 192
steps and extends 455 feet. The pride and glory is the neo-classical Opera
House that saw musical events conducted by Tchaikovsky and ballets featuring
    Anna Pavlova.
