Awaiting Your Return From Shore | Thessaloniki is the
capital of Macedonia. Although the area dates back 3000 years, the city's
was founded in 315 B.C., when King Kassandros of Macedon named the city
after his wife Thessalonike, a half-sister of Alexander the Great. St. Paul
visited in A.D. 50 and 56, and set up a Christian community. Thessaloniki's landmarks range from the 15th century Venetian Tower to
the Arch of Galerius, erected in A.D. 303. Some magnificent churches date to
early beginnings, and many were converted into mosques and synagogues.
Between the 17th and 20th centuries Jews made up more than half the
population as a result of the arrival in 1492 of some 20,000 Jews who had
been expelled from Spain. They played a predominant part in commerce and
    industry.
Thessaloniki centers around Aristotle Square, a traffic-free area
bordered by arcadehousing cafes and restaurants. There is a popular
pedestrian seafront promenade, and Deluxe shops and boutiques are found on
    Odos Mitropoleos and Odos Tsimski.
